The Christian understanding is that love comes from God and love is the theme of Christianity. Unconditional love is also expressed. Unselfish love of others (agape), are often contrasted as "ascending" and "descending" love, respectively, but are ultimately the same thing.

In Buddhism, the theme focuses on the "path of meditation" but not love. Meditation is to take the path of the Bodhisattva , which is the idea of salvation within unselfish, altruistic love for all sentient beings. Love is found when one seeks enlightment and to be enlightened means to be filled with love.

キリスト教の信仰においては、愛は非常に大きなテーマだ。「神は愛である」, 「無条件の愛」と表現される。キリストが十字架にかけられ、全人類の罪を贖ったことにより実現される愛を隣人愛としている。

仏教や禅の深求では、中心的なテーマは「瞑想の道」で愛そのものではない。そもそも、愛の道と対比され、探求には愛の実践は含まれない。しかし、道に到達した時、愛が起きる。悟りを開くということは、愛に満ちるということ。
